DAO treasury management turns collective decisions into resource allocation by separating headline balances from liquid, available capacity and by matching controls to actual obligations.

Sound treasury management connects mission, obligations, risk limits, decision rights, custody, and public reporting. It does not require forecasting markets with certainty. Instead, participants identify expenses, preserve an appropriate operating runway, diversify dependencies where justified, and use controls proportional to transaction consequences. Every allocation still involves tradeoffs and can lose value or fail to achieve its purpose.

Start with obligations and usable runway

Runway estimates how long a treasury can meet planned net expenses before needing additional resources. A basic calculation divides liquid, budgeted assets by expected monthly outflow, but realistic planning adjusts for asset volatility, restricted balances, pending commitments, taxes or fees where relevant, and revenue uncertainty. Scenario analysis is more informative than one precise number that depends on fragile assumptions.

A treasury holding mostly its native governance token faces correlated risk. A market decline can reduce the treasury's purchasing capacity just when contributor compensation becomes harder and community confidence weakens. Selling a large position may also depress liquidity or alter token distribution. Managers should disclose these constraints rather than marking every treasury unit at the latest small trade and calling it spendable cash.

Budgets connect strategy to accountability

A budget should identify an objective, owner, amount, schedule, milestones, and reporting method. Recurring operations deserve different controls from experimental grants or emergency spending. Governance can approve an annual envelope while specialized committees authorize smaller transactions within published limits. This reduces voter overload without giving committees undefined discretion over the entire treasury.

Evaluation should include results as well as disbursements. A payment transaction proves funds moved, not that software shipped, users benefited, or risks declined. Milestone-based releases, renewal reviews, and public variance reports help participants compare plans with outcomes. Measurements need context because easily counted activity, such as events held or reports produced, may not represent durable mission impact.

Multisigs divide custody among accountable signers

A multisignature wallet requires a threshold of authorized signers to approve a transaction. A three-of-five arrangement can tolerate one unavailable signer and one compromised key without permitting either to move funds alone. Threshold selection should reflect availability, independence, transaction size, and recovery needs. Five keys held by employees of one company do not create the same resilience as independent signers with separate devices and jurisdictions.

Signer policy should define mandate, transaction verification, conflicts, incident response, rotation, and public reporting. Signers need to compare destination, amount, chain, calldata, and authorization with the approved proposal. They should not treat their role as ceremonial. At the same time, policy must clarify whether they may refuse technically valid but unsafe instructions and how such a refusal can be reviewed or overridden.

Diversification and yield introduce new risks

Diversifying operating assets can reduce dependence on one token, but execution affects markets and stakeholders. Transparent auctions, gradual sales, hedges, or strategic swaps each create price, counterparty, governance, and disclosure questions. The objective should be stated, such as protecting twelve months of expenses, rather than framed as a prediction that one asset will outperform another.

Seeking yield is not cash management without risk. Lending protocols, stablecoins, custodians, bridges, and tokenized instruments add smart-contract, issuer, liquidity, depeg, operational, and legal uncertainties. Expected return should be assessed against plausible loss and access constraints. A treasury's first responsibility may be availability for mission commitments, not maximizing nominal yield on every idle balance.
