Fully diluted valuation, or FDV, multiplies a token's current unit price by a defined fully diluted supply, often maximum supply. It asks what the aggregate token value would be if that supply existed and every unit were valued at the current marginal price. The arithmetic is simple; the interpretation is conditional.
FDV does not claim that future units can all be sold at today's price or that the project is worth that amount. It is a supply-adjusted comparison that highlights future issuance, especially when circulation is low. Analysts must state the chosen supply, release schedule, token rights, and mechanism connecting project activity to holders.

The formula and its assumptions
If a token trades at one currency unit and defined diluted supply is ten billion tokens, FDV is ten billion currency units. Circulating market capitalization instead multiplies the same price by circulating supply. The gap represents units excluded from current circulation under the provider's definitions, not a guaranteed amount of future dilution.
The denominator may be maximum supply, projected supply at a future date, or total supply when no credible cap exists. Different choices produce different figures. A responsible presentation names the supply basis and measurement time, then checks mint authority, burns, bridge accounting, and governance power to change issuance.
Marginal price is not liquidation value
Market price usually reflects the latest trade at the margin. Multiplying that price by every token creates a notional aggregate valuation; it does not mean all holders can sell at that level. Large sales consume available bids and can move the price, particularly when reported circulation overstates effective float.
The same limitation applies to circulating market capitalization, public-company market capitalization, and many asset valuations. It does not make FDV useless. It means the metric should compare projects and supply structures rather than estimate cash proceeds available from liquidating an entire network at once.
The market-cap-to-FDV gap
A wide gap signals that many units are outside reported circulation, prompting questions about release timing and recipients. It does not independently establish overvaluation. Future supply may arrive slowly, fund productive security, or meet expanding demand; alternatively, it may subsidize activity and concentrate benefits among insiders.
A narrow gap means most defined supply is already counted as circulating, reducing one source of future dilution. It says nothing by itself about demand, rights, security, governance, or current valuation. An asset can have little remaining issuance and still lack a durable reason for holders to retain it.
Compare like with like
FDV comparisons are meaningful only when tokens have sufficiently similar functions and claims. A governance token without economic rights should not be valued as though it were equity merely because a protocol earns fees. A tokenized fund share, network fee asset, collateral token, and reward unit require different analytical frameworks.
Even within one category, adjust for treasury ownership, required staking, circulating definitions, and chain representations. Enterprise value concepts may require subtracting treasury assets or liabilities, but token holders may have no enforceable claim on either. Never assign treasury value to holders without verifying rights and governance access.
Build scenarios instead of targets
Project supply by period using known vesting, emissions, burns, and governance decisions. Then construct explicit demand or value-accrual scenarios based on usage, required balances, fee rights, or other supported mechanisms. Vary assumptions rather than holding today's token price constant throughout future dilution.
Report ranges and sensitivities, not certainty. A useful model shows which assumptions drive results: user retention, fee generation, payout authorization, staking demand, release pace, or discount rate. FDV is the first screen for future supply; it becomes analysis only when connected to rights, cash or utility flows, and timing.
