Coinbase tokenized stocks go live natively on Base for eligible non-U.S. users

The tokens use Coinbase's B20 standard and are backed 1:1 by shares held by Alpaca, a regulated broker and custodian, the Base post says. Coinbase's product page says the offering is made under Regulation S, is not available to people in the United States and other restricted jurisdictions, and limits primary minting and redemption to KYC-onboarded institutional partners and authorized participants.

What the Base launch changes

Base says eligible users can hold the tokens in self-custody wallets, trade them through Aerodrome and use them across parts of the DeFi ecosystem. The announcement names Aave collateral, liquidity pools and automated trading strategies as possible uses. Those are product capabilities and ecosystem integrations described by Base; the launch announcement does not provide independent usage, liquidity or volume data.

The B20 design is intended to handle dividends and stock splits through an onchain multiplier so that token balances do not change and existing DeFi positions do not break, according to Base. The token remains a claim on the underlying share through the stated custody structure, not a claim that gives every holder unrestricted access to U.S. securities markets.

Access remains conditional

Decrypt reported that availability varies by jurisdiction and may require identity checks. Coinbase's product materials say the tokens are issued by Coinbase under an Abu Dhabi Global Market authorization and held in a bankruptcy-remote custody structure, but the legal, transfer and redemption conditions depend on the relevant prospectus and the user's jurisdiction.

The verified change is therefore narrower than a claim that stocks have become permissionless or universally accessible: Coinbase has launched a new tokenized-equity product on Base for a defined international user group, with stated custody, compliance and access limits.
