Coinbase's UK stock service turns the everything exchange into a regulatory test
The platform's current documentation shows UK residents can access U.S. stocks through an FCA-authorized Coinbase affiliate, but the brokerage remains separate from its crypto business.
Coinbase's current product documentation lists stock trading for residents of the United States and the United Kingdom, putting a regulated brokerage service beside the company's crypto markets. The support page says UK customers can open a Coinbase Capital Markets brokerage account, fund it with cash and use the same broad Coinbase interface to access U.S. stocks.
That is a meaningful expansion of the platform's addressable market, but it is not a merger of the legal or risk systems behind the products. The documentation says UK stock trading is offered by CB Payments Ltd, which is authorized and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under FRN 1045733. CBPL arranges access to Coinbase Capital Markets and Apex Clearing for execution, clearing and custody.
The money leg is deliberately conventional
Stock trades settle in U.S. dollars, not in a tokenized share balance. Coinbase says a user's USDC can be converted into dollars before a stock purchase, while UK customers can use pounds through its USDC auto-buy flow. Equity trades settle on a T+1 basis, one business day after the trade date, which keeps the service inside the familiar settlement rhythm of the securities market.
The details matter because the product is being marketed as a bridge between crypto-native funding and traditional securities access. USDC can help a customer move money into the account, but the stock itself remains a security held through a brokerage and clearing arrangement rather than an asset on Coinbase's crypto ledger.
One app, separate protections
Coinbase's disclosures draw a firm boundary around protection. Securities services are offered by Coinbase Capital Markets, a FINRA and SIPC member, while digital-asset services are provided by Coinbase and its affiliates. SIPC does not cover digital assets or cash held in a Coinbase Inc. or affiliate account, and the stock service is subject to availability and may change at Coinbase's discretion.
The rollout is also not frictionless. The documentation permits only whole-share limit orders in the basic stock flow, and says the feature is gradually rolling out on Coinbase Advanced mobile. The strategic bet is clear: a crypto platform can become a broader financial front end. The harder test is whether customers understand which entity holds which asset, which rules apply and where the protections stop.
