Euroclear creates a digital-assets role as post-trade infrastructure moves onchain
The securities settlement group appointed Usman Ahmad to lead a dedicated digital-assets strategy, including work on issuance, tokenization and new forms of settlement.
Euroclear has appointed Usman Ahmad as its first Head of Digital Assets, creating a dedicated role inside one of the world's largest post-trade market infrastructures. The July 15 announcement says Ahmad will lead the group's digital-assets strategy with immediate effect.
Ahmad joins from Zodia Markets, where he was co-founder and chief executive, after earlier work at OSL and more than 17 years in senior capital-markets technology roles at HSBC and Merrill Lynch. His background bridges regulated digital-asset brokerage and the systems used by traditional markets.
The infrastructure layer is the story
Euroclear's business is the plumbing around bonds, equities, derivatives and funds: custody, settlement and post-trade processing across domestic and cross-border markets. Its digital-assets work is therefore less about launching a token and more about deciding how issuance and settlement can fit into systems that already carry institutional obligations.
The company points to digital issuance, tokenization and new settlement models as priority areas. It also cites the digitization of Eurobond issuance and collaboration with Banque de France on a short-term commercial-paper project as examples of work already moving in that direction.
A signal for tokenized markets
The appointment arrives as banks, issuers and asset managers test whether a blockchain record can improve issuance, collateral movement or settlement without weakening legal finality and operational controls. Euroclear's language focuses on safety, efficiency and resilience, the same criteria that govern its conventional infrastructure.
That focus separates institutional tokenization from the retail launch cycle. A post-trade operator does not need to attract millions of wallets to make a blockchain project useful. It needs a narrow transaction process that settles reliably, fits existing legal documents and saves enough time or capital to justify the change.
What the appointment does and does not change
Euroclear has not announced a new token or a timetable for a public product. The immediate change is organizational: digital assets now have a named owner with experience across both sides of the market. The useful milestones will be a defined issuance service, a live settlement workflow and evidence that clients use it beyond a pilot.
