Monad proposal would let wallets rotate keys without changing addresses

The draft proposal is titled Flexible and Upgradeable Account Authentication and was authored by Kushal Babel and Jan Camenisch. CoinDesk reported that the design could support passkeys, multiple signers, account recovery and post-quantum cryptography.

The address stays; the authenticator changes

Most externally owned accounts on Ethereum-compatible networks are tightly coupled to the private key that signs transactions. Losing that key can make the account difficult or impossible to recover, while adopting a different authentication method generally means creating another address and transferring assets.

Monad's proposed model would keep an account address fixed while allowing its authentication configuration to be changed. That configuration could include a conventional key, a device passkey, several signers or a future quantum-resistant credential. A recovery rule could also require two trusted parties to approve a replacement key if the original is lost.

The proposal is an account-security design, not a wallet release. It does not give users a new feature to activate today, and it does not show that Monad accounts are currently protected against quantum attacks.

An early draft, not a network upgrade

The authors say the current version covers the broad architecture and that a detailed implementation specification still needs to be written. The proposal would therefore need technical review, community support and client work before it could become a live protocol change.

The wider problem is real but long term. Ethereum's post-quantum roadmap likewise treats signature agility and migration as ongoing work, while noting that users' funds are safe today and that wallet software is expected to guide future changes. Monad's draft is best read as an early attempt to make that kind of migration possible without breaking an account's address identity.
