Ripple maps four-stage quantum-readiness plan for XRP Ledger

Ripple says XRPL will assess quantum exposure, test new cryptography and prepare a parallel migration path; the plan does not mean today's wallets face an active quantum attack.

Ripple is preparing the XRP Ledger for a future in which quantum computers could undermine the cryptography protecting wallets and transactions. In a current account of the work, Ripple senior engineering director Ayo Akinyele described a four-stage plan built around assessing exposure, testing alternatives, running old and new security systems in parallel and maintaining an emergency migration route.

The project is preparation, not a response to a live break. Ripple's post-quantum roadmap targets full readiness by 2028 and says no quantum computer can currently break the cryptography used by the ledger. The company describes the threat as long-term, while arguing that migration work has to begin before the hardware becomes operationally dangerous.

The migration has several stages

Ripple's first steps are technical assessment and controlled experimentation. Its roadmap says the team is evaluating NIST-recommended post-quantum schemes against XRPL workloads, including signature size, verification cost, throughput and network efficiency. Ripple also describes work with Project Eleven on a hybrid signing proof of concept, validator testing, Devnet benchmarking and an early custody-wallet prototype.

The later transition would run existing elliptic-curve signatures alongside quantum-resistant alternatives before any broader move. That sequencing matters because a ledger migration has to cover more than a signing algorithm: validators, wallets, custodians, applications and infrastructure providers would all need compatible upgrade paths.

What the plan does not establish

The announcements do not show that XRP or XRPL accounts are currently compromised, that a quantum attack is underway or that a final replacement signature standard has been selected. The 2028 date is a target, and the roadmap still depends on testing, implementation decisions and coordination among independent validators.

The immediate news is therefore a change in planning posture rather than a user-facing security upgrade. The useful checkpoints are a published implementation design, test results on XRPL's development networks and a clear migration process that explains how account owners would move without losing access to funds.
