UK police forfeit 20.21 Bitcoin traced to defunct darknet markets

Investigators traced the holdings to darknet marketplaces that operated between 2016 and 2019. The person under investigation had previously been convicted of money-laundering offences and has since died, so the recovery proceeded as an asset-forfeiture case rather than a new criminal prosecution of a living defendant.

What the police record establishes

The force described the recovery as its largest cryptocurrency seizure since crypto-wallet freezing orders became available in April 2024. Those powers allow authorities to freeze assets when there are reasonable grounds to suspect a connection to criminal activity; the later forfeiture required the court to be satisfied that the property represented proceeds of unlawful conduct.

The police statement says the marketplaces had facilitated criminal activity ranging from people trafficking to drug supply, but it does not name the markets or publish the wallet addresses involved. A case about traceability, not anonymity

Detective Constable Anthony Davis said the case showed how blockchain records can support financial investigations years after the underlying marketplace activity. That is a claim about the evidentiary value of the public ledger in this case, not proof that every crypto transaction is attributable to a known person or that tracing alone establishes criminal liability.

The recovered Proceeds of Crime Act funds will be reinvested in community and police initiatives, the force said. No separate sentencing outcome applies to the deceased subject, and the public accounts do not disclose whether any additional assets or participants remain under investigation.
