Michigan court orders Kalshi to block residents from sports contracts

The ruling is not a final judgment on whether Kalshi’s contracts are securities, commodities or unlawful sports betting. Violations could expose the company to a fine of $500,000 per day, according to the report.

The immediate result is a state-level access restriction. It does not automatically decide how Kalshi operates elsewhere, and it does not invalidate the federal permissions the company says allow it to list event contracts.

The case tests a growing market

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel argues that Kalshi is enabling sports betting without a state license. Kalshi has maintained that its event contracts are federally regulated derivatives. More than a dozen states have raised similar objections, creating a patchwork risk for a product designed to be nationally accessible.

Scale makes the dispute consequential. The Block said Kalshi recorded $38.67 billion in August volume, compared with $8.41 billion across Polymarket and its U.S. counterpart. Volume measures contracts traded, not revenue or profits, but it shows why regulators are paying attention.
